Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language

The Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) are official qualifications, which prove your level of proficiency in the Spanish language and which are awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.  On the official Diplomas website (http://diplomas.cervantes.es/) you can find all the information you need about them.

What level am I?

There are four levels: A1 Starter Level, A2 NEW!, B1 Initial Level, B2 Intermediate Level and C2 Proficiency Level.

It is advisable to take a Placement Test in order to make sure that the exam you take is the correct level for you. To book a test please contact Enrolments on 020 7235 0353 or cenlon@cervantes.es.

Examination and Registration Dates

The DELE exams are held three times a year, in May, August and November.

May 2010

  • Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd / Registration: 22 February-16 April

August 2010

  • Friday 20th / Registration: 12 July-30 July

November 2010

  • Friday 19th and Saturday 20th / Registration: 1 September-15 October

  • DELE A1: £85, £77 (groups), £60 (IC students)*  
  • DELE A2: £100, £90 (groups), £70 (IC students)*
  • DELE Inicial: £110, £99 (groups), £77 (IC students)*  
  • DELE Intermedio: £125, £113 (groups), £88 (IC students)*  
  • DELE Superior: £135, £122 (groups), £95 (IC students)*

Enrolment

In order to enrol you need to bring the following documents with you:

  • An enrolment form, which you can collect from the Instituto Cervantes in London or download here: Enrolment Form (PDF). There are two copies; both must be filled in and sent by post or handed in to any of the DELE examination centres in the UK.
  • A photocopy of a form of ID which contains a photo and the following information: identity, nationality, place and date of birth.  These details must correspond with the information given on the enrolment form.
  • A signed declaration, confirming that you fulfil at least two of the conditions described in section two of the epigraph General Conditions. Please click here to download a copy of the Certified Declaration (PDF). Once the candidate has enrolled for the exam, they will receive a stamped copy of their enrolment form which states the code which they have been assigned and they will receive by post the official announcement of the exam, which states the date, time and place that the tests will take place.

Examination Format - A1

Students of this level will have sufficient linguistic competence to engage in situations that require a basic level of communication.

  • Reading comprehension (45 min).
  • Writing (25 min). Compilation of short simple texts of a practical nature.
  • Aural comprehension. (20 min).
  • Conversation (10-15 min).

Examination Format - B1

 

Students of this level will have sufficient linguistic competence to engage in situations that require an elementary level of communication.

  • Reading comprehension (40 min).
  • Writing (40 min). Compilation of short simple texts of a practical nature.
  • Aural comprehension. (30 min).
  • Grammar and vocabulary test (40 min).
  • Conversation (10-15 min).

Examination Format - B2

 

Students of this level will have sufficient linguistic competence to engage in ordinary situations encountered in daily life and normal circumstances of communication that do not require a specialised knowledge of the language.

  • Reading comprehension (60 min).
  • Writing (60 min) Compilation of a personal letter and a composition. Each one must contain between 150 and 200 words.
  • Aural comprehension (30 min). The candidate will answer 12 multiple choice questions on 4 oral texts (recordings). The recordings will consist of announcements, news items, conversations and interviews.
  • Grammar and vocabulary test (60 min).
  • Conversation (10-15 min).

Examination Format - C2

Students of this level will have the linguistic competence needed to engage in situations that require an advanced use of the Spanish language and a knowledge of Spanish culture.

  • Reading Comprehension (60 min).
  • Writing (60 min). Compilation of a letter related to public issues and a composition. Each piece of written work must be between 159 and 200 words.
  • Aural Comprehension (45 min). The candidate will answer 16 multiple choice questions on 4 oral texts (recordings). The recordings will consist of conversations, or commentaries or reports broadcast in the media.  
  • Grammar and vocabulary test (60 min).
  • Conversation (10-15 min).

Online preparation courses for B1 Initial and B2 Intermediate can be accessed through AVE. The Course Guide can be consulted in both Spanish and English.

Students of the IC can also benefit from free membership of the Instituto Cervantes Library in London where you can access past papers.
